Time - A Mysterious Thing
I find myself sitting here this afternoon during lunch, pondering how to utilze my time the rest of the week. As task after task begins to overwhelm my mind, I notice myself becoming anxious. How will I get all this stuff done? Can I complete the tasks in time? And what about my family? With a wife and four kids, I'm concerned that I'm not devoting enough time to them. All this along with a list of other duties and responsibilities. I remind myself not to worry though, after all, it’s all in God's time. I just need to be diligent and focus, and push on.
So I switch my attention to watching a video from the Billy Graham Classics on YouTube. He begins by reading Psalm 90:10…
“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; And if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, Yet is their strength labour and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”
First of all let me address how amazing it is that you can hear God speaking to you if you just take the time to listen. What are the chances that as I sit here thinking about how to manage my time, that of all the Billy Graham videos out there, this is the one that would play? As I am watching the video, he begins discussing how, for centuries, we have only been able to travel as fast as a horse can ride, and then moves into several of the modern inventions that have changed that in our world today. I am intrigued by a statement that he makes… “We’ve invented all of these modern things to save time, and we have less time than ever before.” I instantly stopped to think on just what that meant. I mean, how accurate is that? We have invented so many devices that have claimed to save us time, make life easier, allow us more free time, or me time. We all can think of a handful of inventions we currently own that were designed for this purpose. Yet more so than ever, we are constantly overwhelmed, overworked, and over-stimulated. We push through this life telling ourselves it’s worth it, that one day we will reap the reward of our earthly works. Things will be much better if I can just get here. Things will be much easier if I can just do that. Things will be much simlper if I can just have this. All the while, we do not pay attention to the time that has slipped away from us, and the true priorities that we have allowed the devil to convince us to put off for later. None of us know when our last day on this earth is. We cannot count the days or minutes. We cannot set a date and tell ourselves we will be ready for God by this date. We must reprioritize our lives and put Jesus first. Excercise caution to these worldly possessions that claim to get us there faster and cling to the word of God and prayer. For if you slow down and listen, He will show you the way you are to go. He will guide you along the path. Even though the road may be rough and at times unbearable, the reward is worth it.
